THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTHY RESPIRATORY SYSTEM SCIENCE BAND 6

LIST OF AIR POLLUTANTS

 CARBON MONOXIDE
-Fuel combustion from vehicles and engines

§    NITROGEN DIOXIDE
-Fuel combustion (electric utilities, big industrials boilers, vehicles) and wood burning.

§    SULPHUR DIOXIDE
-Fuel combustion (especially high-sulphur coal); electric utilities and industrial processes and natural occurances like volcanoes.

§    LEAD
-Smelters (metal refineries) and other metal industries; combustion of leaded gasoline in piston engine aircraft; waste incinerators (metal burners), and battery manufacturing

§    GROUND-LEVEL OZONE
-Secondary pollutants formed by chemical reaction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and NOx in the presence of sunlight.

§    PARTICULATE MATTER

-This is formed through chemical reaction, fuel combustion (burning coal, woo, diesel), industrial processes, farming (plowing, field burning), and unpaved roads or during road constructions.

DISEASES RELATED TO RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

  Bronchitis
- inflammation or swelling of the bronchial tubes (bronchi), the air passages between the nose and the lungs

§     Pneumonia
-infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs

§     Asthma
-Asthma is a chronic (long-term) lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways

§    Emphysema
- turns the spherical air sacs — clustered like bunches of      grapes — into large, irregular pockets with gaping holes in their inner walls and reduce the oxygen that go into bloodstream

§    Tuberculosis
-bacterial infection that can spread through the lymph nodes and bloodstream to any organ in your body and most found in lungs

§    Lung Cancer
-uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that start off in one or both lungs; usually in the cells that line the air passages

WAYS TO IMPROVE AIR QUALITY

§  -Support car pooling
§  -Avoid smoking
§  -Avoid open burning
§  -Stop illegal deforestation
§  -Use fluorescent lightbulb instead of standard lightbulb
§  -Use recycle items
§  -Stop using sprays that contain CFC (e.g: aerosol spray)
§  -Organize  awareness campaigns about the ways to improve the quality of air
§  -Use public transportation
§  -Support hybrid car
§  -Build more green building (energy efficiency building)
§  -Tighten law enforcement about air pollution
§  -Penalize those who pollute the air
§  -Support solar powered items
§  -Buy green electricity that produced low pollution
§  -Recycle papers, plastic, aluminium cans, glass bottles and cardboard

GOOD HABITS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF AIR

-Switch off the electrical appliances when we’re not using it
§  -Recycle reuse every things you can
§  -Don’t waste all of the things that we use whether in house or office
§  -Don’t just throw away the chemical-based substances, send it to a recycle centre
§  -Walk or ride our own bike to do errands for shorter distance
§  -When refilling the gas tank, avoid spilling it to prevent evaporation into atmosphere
§  -Hang the clothes outside to dry instead of using the dryer
§  -Car pool or use public transportation
§  -Use mechanical pencil instead of wood pencil
§  -Use correction tape instead of liquid paper
§  -Shop with canvas bag
§  -Use rechargeable batteries
